Frauke C. Schaefer, MD
Dr. Frauke Schaefer graduated from the University of Cologne in Germany as a medical doctor in 1985. She specialized in Family Medicine and worked for seven years in Nepal, directing a hospital for persons disabled by leprosy and other causes. After two years of intensive supervised training at a German facility for acute psychiatry and psychotherapy, she became certified to provide Psychotherapy as a medical doctor. After marrying Dr. Charlie Schaefer, she moved to NC where she completed a residency in psychiatry at Duke University. After a fellowship in religion and health she transitioned into psychiatric private practice.
Dr. Schaefer has more than 20 years of experience in psychiatry and psychotherapy, frequently drawing on her background in family medicine and cross-cultural training. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She also holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (UK).
Dr. Frauke Schaefer has special interests in psychological trauma and resilience and in the integration of spiritual resources into the practice of psychiatry and psychotherapy. She has researched, published, and presented in the areas of trauma and resilience and the effect of spiritual factors on the consequences of trauma. Together with her husband, she provides consultations, leads workshops and retreats for global cross-cultural healthcare providers in collaboration with Alongside, and Medsend's Longevity Project.
She loves to run, bike, sing, travel, and garden (including the water lilies above).
